Houston Independent School District Unique Learning System
Download Case StudyThe Houston Independent School District (HISD), the largest district in Texas and one of the largest in the U.S., lacked a cohesive program to meet the needs of students with significant disabilities served by 375 educators in 600 special needs classrooms across the district. HISD was challenged with finding a comprehensive, standards-based, grade-level solution that aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and supported an alternate assessment, the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness-Alternate 2 (STAAR® Alternate 2). After a careful review of seven programs, the district selected Unique Learning System, and over a two-year period, a designated “Unique All-Star Team” of program specialists and experienced teachers collaborated with n2y to optimize implementation. The team attributes its success to ongoing observations and data collection.
